Day 24 – Thamesford to Normandale, ON Canada– 9/12/19

Today’s Miles: 67
Total: 1,186

We woke to a wonderful breakfast that Norma prepared for us. It was a feast; especially when we are used to oatmeal for breakfast.  We were joined by Jim and Matt as riding companions today as well.  I was expecting them both to just ride a short distance with us, but Jim went with us the whole day and Matt went about 26 miles with us before turning back.

Jim asked if we wanted to ride with him to his cousin’s which was a short distance from where we were going anyway.  We told him that if he was sure it was fine with his cousin, we could just camp in their backyard.  Well, the cousin said that she had beds and we were welcome to them, so that is where we are at.  Henry and Marlene’s.  They have a new home that they have been working on and it is beautiful. Quite big and overlooking Lake Erie.

We had a great day of cycling.  It was misting for about half the day; just enough to get you wet and a little cold.  It was a little surprising that it lasted as long as it did.  The forecasts had it ending long before it really did.  The wind was mostly our enemy today as well.  It pretty much came from the south and that is the direction we traveled for most of the day. It was fun riding with Jim and Matt.  We just did a lot of talking about farming, taxes, land values and families along the way.  It helped the miles go by and I learned so much about the life here in Canada.

Ate out most of the day.  We had lunch at a little café along the way and had dinner at a restaurant down by the lake tonight.  It was some great food, but feel like I ate too much today.  That’s terrible, isn’t it?  Well, it late, so better be turning in.

Norma and Jim Poel we stayed with.  They are such great people; really enjoyed the stay.

Tobacco fields.

This is ginseng that is in its fist year of planting.

This is ginseng that is in its second year.  They have to cover it in the second year to protect from the sun to have it produce like it should.  Much of it is sent to China.
