Today is my 51st birthday. I mentioned earlier, I think, that this trip was a dream of mine to mark my half-way point through life. I am glad that I was able to do this. It has been good for me to learn of myself, to learn much of my country and to think upon God as I have. Today has been a very good day. I miss spending it with my sweetheart, but I have been treated very well. We didn’t have a long distance to ride today so we slept in a bit. We woke at 7:30 to begin breakfast by 8:00. It was another quite chilly night, so I was ready to get up. At the beginning of the trip, the nights were so warm that I sent home my 20 degree bag I bought a 55 degree bag at REI. The last few nights, I have been sleeping in my cloths to stay warm. I hope I did the right thing in sending that bag home. It should warm up.
The ride today was wonderful. It was a short distance of 35 miles and it was beautiful. We passed small lakes, farms and houses and I really enjoyed the travel. We have ridden by a lot of cotton, but I have yet to see it being harvested. I do hope I get the chance. We are camped just outside of Reidsville, GA in a state park. This park is beautiful as well. The tourist season here is over and there are not many campers. The camp is so clean and quiet. There is a lake in the middle of it and it was just so pretty tonight. I will send a picture.
The group has been so kind to me today. Not that they aren’t normally kind. They would all say, “Happy Birthday”, and the cooks cooked me my favorite meal of hamburgers and made this great desert of pound cake topped with fruit and condensed sweet milk. It really was good. I spent much of the time this afternoon getting some office work done, which now seems like a break from the riding/camping routine.
Many of you sent me a nice note of happy birthday as well. I appreciate you my good friends and family. You are what is important in life. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. We have a much longer day tomorrow of about 85 miles. I think the rest today will help us get through it.
