Day 13 - Newberry MI to Sault ST Marie MI – 9/1/19

Today’s Miles: 68
Total: 653

Big riding day today.  Most of the way was the same scenery we have had over the last few days.  It is some wetlands park area.  It does seem to have a lot of dead trees.  I’m assuming because of the wet.  Anyway, got a little old.  We are ready for some new stuff.

We did have a great surprise today.  We were riding along and we pass this older man going the other direction and I say hi to him and he kind of waved but kept is head down.  I didn’t think nothing of it and then a little later this man comes up behind me and says passing on the left and I wave him through.  When he gets up beside me, I see that it is Bill Goshorn.  He is a man that I rode with down the Atlantic Coast with 8 years ago and he planned a Michigan ride for us in 2013. I was so surprised.  I called him a few days back to say hi as we were riding through Michigan and he decided to make the trip to come see us and spend a little time.  He is from Petoskey, MI and traveled for two hours to get here and two hours back.

We rode a few miles down the road and had lunch with him.  It was so great to catch up on the things he has been doing and he was interested in Nancy, Tim and my lives as well.  The funny thing is he had all that distance to travel, unloaded his bike and started down the road and within ten minutes ran into us.  His timing was impeccable.

Bill is next to me.  He is 78 and still riding strong.

We are in Sault St Marie (Pronounces Soo St..).  It is a pretty cool place with locks that connect Lake Superior with Lake Huron.  Back in history, this channel was just rapids and it was not possible to get these big ships through.  It is just funny to see ships moving just outside the campground. I think this is the furthest north we will be camping.  It has been pretty much perfect riding weather.  70’s during the day and it will get to the high 40’s at night. A little cool.

Had a great dinner of pizza and salad.  I think we were all just starving.

I just want to tell Grace, Charlotte, Ellie, Kit, Max, Reese and Lincoln that I love them very much.

There was a lot of today that we had to ride right of the rumble strip.  It only left about one foot of the road as you can see.  That took some concentration.

Farm hay bales.

Boats below the locks tonight.
